Candle Care & FAQs
What is my candle made of?
Your candle is crafted with 100% natural soy wax, bringing a natural and clean-burning experience to your home. Just like hair and body products, my candles are made using fragrance oils, which are a blend of essential and synthetic oils. This combination ensures the safest and most effective burn while delivering a beautiful fragrance release in your space.
How long can I burn my candle at a time?
I recommend burning your candle for no longer than three hours per session to prevent the jar from overheating. Allow the wax to fully set before relighting the wick.
Why do I need to trim the wick?
As your candle burns, the wick may form a "mushroom" shape at the tip. Trimming the wick to approximately 7mm before each burn helps:
✔️ Keep the wick upright and prevent it from curling into the wax.
✔️ Ensure a clean, even burn.
✔️ Avoid difficulties in relighting the candle.
Neglecting to trim the wick may cause excess soot, uneven burning, or even prevent the candle from lighting properly.
How do I prevent my candle from tunneling?
To avoid tunneling, allow the wax to fully liquefy to the edges of the jar on the first burn. As a guideline:
- For small jars, burn for up to 1 hour.
- For large jars, burn for up to 2 hours.
This creates a “memory burn,” ensuring the wax melts evenly in future burns.
How do I know when my candle is finished?
Stop burning your candle when approximately 7mm of wax remains at the base of the jar. You can check this by gently inserting a skewer or similar object into the liquefied wax.
Burning beyond this point risks overheating the jar, which could cause it to crack or shatter.
Why is there black residue on my jar?
The black residue is soot buildup from the wick burning. This can be easily wiped away with a cool, damp cloth to keep your jar looking clean. Regular wick trimming will also help minimize soot.
Can I repurpose my jar?
Absolutely! I love when customers find creative ways to reuse their candle jars. Here are some ideas:
✨ A small vase for fresh flowers.
🍬 A decorative jar for wrapped chocolates or lollies.
☕ A sugar bowl.
🖊️ A holder for pens, paper clips, or other stationery.
🕯️ A tealight candle holder.
🎁 A DIY gift jar—fill with bath salts, hot chocolate mix, or other treats, cover with fabric, and seal with twine.
Even better—recycle your jars with me! Collect five Simple Retreat jars, clean them thoroughly, and return them for a $50 gift card (postal address available upon request).
What if my candle jar breaks or the wick doesn’t burn properly?
When properly cared for, your candle should burn smoothly. Because of this, I cannot take responsibility for issues such as:
- Poor burning due to lack of wick trimming.
- Uneven wax melting caused by improper burn times.
- Damage to the jar during use.
Please follow these Candle Care & Safety instructions (also listed under the gift box) to ensure the best experience with your candle.
What is the best way to clean my jar?
To remove leftover wax and clean your jar for reuse:
- Fill the jar with boiling water and let it sit until the water cools.
- The remaining wax will float to the surface—simply remove and discard it.
- Wash the jar with warm, soapy water.
- Once wax-free, the jar can be safely washed in your dishwasher.
⚠️ Important: Never place a jar containing wax in the dishwasher. Wax buildup can clog your dishwasher and cause damage over time.
